Ákos Matzon is an eccentric. At first sight, neither his person, nor his works would seem to suggest that. He makes the impression of a jovial citizen rather than a Bohemian painter; his art affects us with its calculated orderliness rather than extravagant or astonishing quality. Still, can one think of a more non-conformist gesture than for an artist not to want to be an artist? We know many stories of youths becoming poets, musicians or painters flying in the face of stern paternal prohibitions. But it is indeed unprecedented to have performed a rebellious act, as Matzon had done, by not choosing a career in art in spite of his father urging him to do so.
